Christopher Mintz-Plasse, meanwhile, is something of a revelation as the newly-monikered MF, his character going on a complex journey that makes you both abhor and sympathise with him, which is no mean feat.Īnd special mention should go to Olga Kurkulina, the former bodybuilder who is a force of nature as Mother Russia in the movie, and who participates in the film’s best brawl when she goes toe-to-toe with Hit-Girl.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s comic timing is also spot-on, although at times he does seem like the film’s least interesting character.Ĭhloe Grace Moretz is as good as ever as Hit-Girl, suffusing the character with just the right combination of fearlessness and vulnerability so that at times her narrative is less superhero story and more twisted coming-of-age tale. The script does feature its fair share of laughs however, with Jim Carrey on scene-stealing form as the hilarious Colonel, who in spite of his clear insanity, gives the film heart and soul as well as laughs. These scenes play out like a foul-mouthed Mean Girls, although when Mindy does finally wreak her revenge, it’s one of the film’s few genuine misfires, the sequence playing out more juvenile than anarchic. In spite of the fact that she’d rather be water-boarded than listen to Justin Bieber, Mindy tries to make friends, only to discovers that teenage girls are 10 times more treacherous than gangsters and pimps. The comic also has a satirical undercurrent, and the film nails that element, especially when the kids are at school. The story is once again based on the comic series by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., and Wadlow’s script retains the sense of danger that was there on the page, most obviously in some truly brutal fight sequences, several of which aren’t for the faint-hearted.

It does retain the anarchy of the original however. We certainly need to see Hit-Girl blossoming into a young woman and Dave taking responsibility for his actions as he becomes a man, but at times it seriously slows the narrative down.

The film gets bogged down in slightly dull drama, with a little too much time spent on Mindy falling out with both Marcus and Dave.
